Reporting to: Software Development Lead

Start date: November 2020
Duty station: Freetown with possible travels to other districts in Sierra Leone

Role Description:

  • Meets with colleagues to determine website needs and follows up with regular conversations and update
  • Creates website layouts with a computer or handmade sketches to organize information and allow for intuitive usage
  • Builds platform to DSTI’s specifications by writing code, designing pages and widgets, and incorporating graphics and video elements
  • Determines the best plug-ins and applications to provide web app with new features and functionality, and installs them accordingly
  • Tests platform using a variety of browsers, including Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, Safari, and Mozilla Firefox; and debugs as necessary
  • Maintains fluency in one or more programming languages, such as Javascript, Python, and Ruby 
  • Regularly checks in with colleagues to assess their satisfaction and determine necessary updates or repairs
  • Assists with publishing content by proofreading, editing, and posting text and graphics
  • Maintains site by checking for errors, broken links, and hacking attempts
  • Develops knowledge of site accessibility standards and legal requirements
  • Assesses site security and installs updated software to ensure that sites and client data remain secure.

Relevant Skills:

  • Data scientist.
  • 2 – 3 years of experience in Software Development or an equivalent of education and experience.
  • Familiarity with JavaScript is desired. Alternatively, knowledge of either Python, GoLang, Java or Ruby, basic knowledge of software development life cycle (e.g. requirements, analysis, design, implementation, testing, and documentation) and execution models (e.g. Waterfall, Agile, Iterative Development, etc.).
  • Understanding of asynchronous request handling, partial page updates, and AJAX, understanding of databases, including SQL, familiarity with build tools.
  • Basic understanding of web markup, including HTML5 and CSS3,
  • Basic understanding of using data to drive decisions and data visualization.
  • Understanding of the differences between multiple delivery platforms, such as mobile vs desktop, and optimizing output to match the specific platform.
  • Unit test and debugging skills.
  • Basic understanding of using data to drive decisions and data visualization and understanding of code versioning tools (Git) is a plus
