What is the role of the Directorate of Science, Technology and Innovation?

 

The vision of the Directorate of Science, Technology and Innovation (DSTI) is simple — to use science, technology and innovation to support the Government of Sierra Leone deliver on its national development plan effectively and efficiently; and to help transform Sierra Leone into an innovation and entrepreneurship hub.

The Directorate has 4 strategic pillars:

  • Data for Decision-making
  • Data Systems & Technology Design
  • Service Delivery & Citizen Engagement
  • Innovation and Entrepreneurial Ecosystem Strengthening

What is the role of the Chief Innovation Officer

 

The 21st century is the age of big data, innovation, and rapid technological advancement. This brings new forms of opportunities, risks and challenges for every government around the world. For Sierra Leone to compete in the global economy, its leaders and the government require support, insight and policy advice related to innovation.

The Chief Innovation Officer for the Government of Sierra Leone provides this assistance to the Office of the Chief Minister and the Office of the President of Sierra Leone.

Where is the Directorate of Science, Technology and Innovation based?

The Directorate of Science, Technology and Innovation is situated in the Office of the President of Sierra Leone and executes its vision and functions through the Office of the Chief Minister.

What is the difference between Innovation and Information and Communication Technology (ICT)?

 

Information Technology (IT) or Information and Communications Technology (ICT) focus on the infrastructure that allows people to access, retrieve, store, transmit, and manipulate information.

Innovation— the process of transforming and scaling new ideas and concepts into practice, is often supported by a robust, effective and predictable IT/ICT infrastructure in addition to reliable power. The work of DSTI centers around the innovation of government service delivery and civic engagement, which is enhanced by ICT infrastructure.

How is the Directorate of Science, Technology and Innovation related to other Government Institutions?

DSTI works across all sectors of government (i.e. Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs)) to accomplish its vision as mandated by the Government of Sierra Leone.
Every MDA has its specific objectives and DSTI is an additional government resource that is available for supporting their individual missions.
