Our Ethos

Problem Oriented

We are scientists, technologists, researchers, artists and more. But we are problem-solvers first. We believe that technology and innovation must be used to solve problems that impact the broader society.

Every philosopher has a wise saying about time or the lack thereof. We agree, and that’s why we think, move, and build quickly.

Peer Learning

Humans and machines have been pursuing advanced knowledge since day 0. YES, self learning is important, AND we aspire to intentionally learn with and from others too.

The biggest challenges of our time will not be solved in a cubicle by a lone genius. That is why at DSTI we believe in openly engaging with all our partners to tackle these challenges.

At DSTI, diversity is not a checkbox. It is embedded in how we work. As such, we enable an environment of open collaboration where everyone can offer their best and most fulfilling selves.

More data has been created in the past 2 years than in the entire human history! The future world for which we are creating solutions today is hard to imagine. So we must stay focused on the future.

A vision for the future of Sierra Leone

What is the role of the Directorate of Science, Technology and Innovation?

The vision of the Directorate of Science, Technology and Innovation (DSTI) is simple — to use science, technology and innovation to support the Government of Sierra Leone deliver on its national development plan effectively and efficiently; and to help transform Sierra Leone into an innovation and entrepreneurship hub.

The Directorate has 4 strategic pillars:

  • Data for Decision-making
  • Data Systems & Technology Design
  • Service Delivery & Citizen Engagement
  • Innovation and Entrepreneurial Ecosystem Strengthening

What is the role of the Chief Innovation Officer

The 21st century is the age of big data, innovation, and rapid technological advancement. This brings new forms of opportunities, risks and challenges for every government around the world. For Sierra Leone to compete in the global economy, its leaders and the government require support, insight and policy advice related to innovation.

The Chief Innovation Officer for the Government of Sierra Leone provides this assistance to the Office of the Chief Minister and the Office of the President of Sierra Leone.

Where is the Directorate of Science, Technology and Innovation based?

The Directorate of Science, Technology and Innovation is situated in the Office of the President of Sierra Leone and executes its vision and functions through the Office of the Chief Minister.

What are the profile of people who work within DSTI?

DSTI works with people who are doers with a healthy dose of passion, creativity and grit for impact and purposeful problem-solving.
If you consider yourself a geek, or nerdy, or weird, or different, or just have a deep passion for
something crazy, you probably should send us your profile and portfolio.

What is the difference between Innovation and Information and Communication Technology (ICT)?

Information Technology (IT) or Information and Communications Technology (ICT) focus on the infrastructure that allows people to access, retrieve, store, transmit, and manipulate information.

Innovation— the process of transforming and scaling new ideas and concepts into practice, is often supported by a robust, effective and predictable IT/ICT infrastructure in addition to reliable power. The work of DSTI centers around the innovation of government service delivery and civic engagement, which is enhanced by ICT infrastructure.

How is the Directorate of Science, Technology and Innovation related to other Government Institutions?

DSTI works across all sectors of government (i.e. Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs)) to accomplish its vision as mandated by the Government of Sierra Leone.
Every MDA has its specific objectives and DSTI is an additional government resource that is available for supporting their individual missions.

I have a great idea, how do I work with the Directorate of Science, technology and Innovation?

We welcome ideas, concepts, and solutions from every citizen that falls in line with our vision. Please email info@dsti.gov.sl
